Where to Surf in October

October is arguably the finest month in the global surf calendar — the convergence month when everything fires at once. The North Atlantic storms that have been building since mid-September are now arriving in fully organised groundswell trains, detonating along Europe’s western coast with the kind of long-period power that makes Hossegor, Ericeira, and Ireland worth travelling to. Morocco’s legendary point breaks, dormant all summer, receive their first proper NW swells of the season: Anchor Point wakes up. Japan is in the final climax of typhoon season. Western Australia transitions from winter to spring with a combination of big Roaring Forties energy, lighter winds, and dramatically emptier car parks. In Hawaii, the first NW swells of the North Pacific season slip beneath the radar before the professional tour arrives, giving October surfers an extraordinary window. And in Peru, the world’s longest wave — Chicama — is in its final productive weeks, warm enough to ride without a heavy suit, before the summer offshore fades. For this reason October rewards the flexible traveller more than almost any other month: wherever you are, something exceptional is likely to be within reach.

Ten destinations — eight established, two the crowds haven’t found yet.

Quick Overview — Where to Surf in October

  • Hossegor, France — Statistical peak: La Gravière at its most powerful, first full autumn Atlantic swells, warm water still
  • Taghazout, Morocco — Season opens: Anchor Point firing for first time all year, warm water, affordable, sand-bottom point perfection

  • Ericeira & Peniche, Portugal — Deep autumn season: Supertubos and Coxos both firing, post-Rip Curl Pro energy, some of the best weeks of the year
  • North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii — Season transition: first NW swells arriving, pre-tour crowds, the best window before the circus of November–January

Hossegor, France

October is widely considered the best month to surf Hossegor. Strong W–NW Atlantic groundswells combine with reliable E–NE offshore winds to create the clean, hollow beach break waves the region is famous for. Water temperatures remain around 20–22°C, and conditions are often ideal at breaks like La Gravière and Les Culs Nus, which can produce powerful barrels on the right swell. Nearby spots such as Les Estagnots and La Piste offer slightly more manageable waves, while La Sud remains a good option for beginners. October also coincides with the WSL Quiksilver Pro France, making it one of the most exciting times to visit the Landes coast.

The single best month for Europe’s finest beach break — La Gravière at statistical peak, offshore mornings and powerful autumn swells.

La Gravière and Les Culs Nus are for experienced surfers — powerful shore break, heavy drops, strong rip currents, close-out sets that can hold you down. La Sud and Les Estagnots accommodate intermediate surfers on moderate swell days; La Piste remains the most forgiving beach in the zone. The WSL contest window (check the schedule) will spike La Gravière crowds during heat windows — plan around it if you want quiet lineups. Water is 19–21°C in October; a 3/2mm fullsuit is the standard call. Fly to Biarritz (BIQ), 25 km south, with abundant low-cost connections from across Europe. October room rates are noticeably lower than summer in most of Hossegor’s accommodation.

  • JO&JOE Hossegor — Hossegor · ★ 4.9 · the standout modern surf-stay in the area, with October representing its finest operating window — the summer families are gone, the WSL contest energy (when it happens) electrifies the town, and the bar’s post-session atmosphere fills with experienced surfers from across Europe chasing the best beach break conditions on the continent; October room availability is generally better and cheaper than September
  • Oasis Surf House Hossegor — Hossegor · ★ 4.8 · the dedicated surf hostel within walking distance of La Gravière — board storage, bike rental, and a community of surfers who are specifically here for the autumn swell window; the October energy at Oasis is arguably the most authentically surf-centric of any month, and the guides’ knowledge of which banks are working and when is unmatched after their summer of daily observation
  • Boardingmania Surf School & Camp — Hossegor / Seignosse · ★ 4.7 · the most established all-levels surf operation in the Hossegor area, with October as its operational highlight: guides who spend six months reading the Landes sandbars have the deepest seasonal knowledge of conditions precisely at the time when those conditions are at their most powerful and variable; particularly well-suited to intermediate surfers who want to surf La Gravière safely for the first time

Taghazout, Morocco

October marks the start of the real surf season in Taghazout as the first North Atlantic NW groundswells arrive after the calmer summer months. The famous right-hand point break at Anchor Point begins to come alive, offering long walls that can run for nearly a kilometre along the coastline. Nearby waves include Killer Point, which often catches more swell, Hash Point in the center of the village, the mellow beach break at Panoramas, and the beginner-friendly sands around Banana Village. October typically brings manageable swell sizes compared to the bigger winter months, while water temperatures remain around 20–21°C and air temperatures stay warm, making it one of the most comfortable months to experience both the surf and Moroccan culture.

Season opening — Anchor Point waking up for the first time all year, warm water and warm air, the ideal introduction to Morocco’s world-class points.

Panoramas Beach and Hash Point are beginner-appropriate; Banana Village (Aourir beach) is a long, forgiving stretch ideal for learners. Killers suits accomplished intermediates on smaller swells. Anchor Point is for experienced surfers when powered up — sand bottom provides some margin for error but the waves are powerful and the rocks on the paddle-out demand attention. October water is 20–21°C; a 2mm shorty is comfortable mid-month, a 3/2 by late October as temperatures slide. Fly to Agadir (AGA), 45 minutes by taxi; note that budget airline connections from UK, France, and the Netherlands are frequent and inexpensive. Accommodation is very affordable — all-inclusive surf camp weeks from €350–600 are standard. Book the high season (October opens the rush) in advance as Taghazout’s best camps fill quickly.

Ireland — Bundoran & Wild Atlantic Way

October is one of the best months to surf along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way as powerful NW and W groundswells from the North Atlantic begin to arrive. Bundoran, in County Donegal, is the country’s main surf hub, centred around The Peak, a reef break that produces clean lefts and rights on a wide range of swell sizes. Nearby Tullan Strand offers a long beach break with peaks for all levels, while Rossnowlagh, about twenty minutes south, provides more sheltered beginner-friendly waves. Just north of Bundoran, Mullaghmore Head enters its big-wave season, where strong winter swells can create waves of 20–50 feet. Water temperatures are cold year-round, but October brings powerful surf with fewer crowds than the summer months.

Season opening on Europe’s wildest coast — The Peak firing, Mullaghmore waking up, autumn swells arriving with full North Atlantic force.

Tullan Strand and Rossnowlagh are beginner-accessible. The Peak suits competent intermediates and upward — it can be overwhelming when fully powered but genuinely magical when conditions align. Mullaghmore in October is spectator or experienced big-wave territory only. Water temperature: 13–15°C — a 5/4mm wetsuit with boots and gloves is essential and non-negotiable. Cold water management is the primary practical challenge of surfing Ireland in autumn; invest in quality neoprene. Fly to Knock (NOC) or Dublin (DUB) and drive — Bundoran is 45 minutes from Knock, 2.5 hours from Dublin; the Wild Atlantic Way is best explored by car. Accommodation is affordable by western European standards (€25–40/night hostel, €60–90 B&B) and most surf camps run through October.

  • Allingham Arms Hotel — Bundoran · ★ 4.7 · the most comfortable Bundoran base, positioned directly on the reef breaks with views of The Peak from the upper rooms; October guests combine quality accommodation with walking-distance access to the town’s best waves, pubs, and the post-session warmth of an Irish evening in what is genuinely one of Europe’s most enjoyable surf towns regardless of season
  • Murf’s Surf School — Bundoran · ★ 4.7 · the best all-levels surf school in the region, overlooking Tullan Strand with guided sessions across the full range of Bundoran and Wild Atlantic Way breaks; particularly valuable for intermediate surfers who want to safely navigate the step-up from Tullan beach break to The Peak’s reef environment, which October’s more powerful but still manageable early-season swells make ideal

Margaret River, Western Australia

October offers excellent surf conditions along Western Australia’s southwest coast. The Indian Ocean storm systems of the Roaring Forties continue to send strong swells toward the region, while spring brings lighter winds and fewer crowds compared to the winter contest season. Famous breaks like Main Break at Surfers Point still deliver powerful left-hand waves, while The Box produces a short, heavy right-hand barrel for experienced surfers. Further north, Yallingup offers more sheltered reef and beach options for intermediates, and Gnarabup Beach provides gentler waves for those progressing. Water temperatures sit around 18–20°C, usually requiring a 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit, and the wider Margaret River region is known for its wineries, forests, and excellent food scene.

Beginners and early intermediates at Gnarabup Beach, Prevelly Beach, and the smaller-swell sections of Yallingup. Main Break and The Box are experienced-surfers-only territory — powerful waves, rocky bottom, local hierarchy; a car park check before paddling out is essential. Sharks are present in WA waters; always heed local beach safety advice. Water is 18–20°C in October; a 3/2 is the standard choice. Ericeira & Peniche, Portugal

By October, Portugal’s main surf regions around Ericeira and Peniche enter peak autumn form as strong W–NW Atlantic groundswells arrive more consistently. In Ericeira, waves like Ribeira d’Ilhas, Coxos, and Pedra Branca begin firing with powerful walls and hollow sections. Further north in Peniche, Supertubos comes into its best season, producing heavy beach break barrels and often hosting the WSL Rip Curl Pro Portugal around this time. With reliable swell, varied breaks facing different directions, affordable travel, and excellent Portuguese food and culture, October is one of the best months to surf the Portuguese coast.

Beginners remain well-served at Foz do Lizandro (Ericeira), Consolação and Baleal beaches (Peniche). Supertubos and Coxos are for experienced surfers — short, violent, consequence-laden waves that punish technical errors. October water temperature: 17–19°C, requiring a 3/2mm minimum; a 4/3 for cold-sensitive surfers. The Rip Curl Pro contest window (check WSL schedule) will bring significant crowds to Supertubos during heat sessions, though the rest of the Peniche peninsula is unaffected. Fly to Lisbon (LIS) and drive to either town in under an hour. North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii

The North Shore’s famous seven-mile coastline is one of the most iconic surf zones in the world, home to waves like Pipeline, Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay, Backdoor, Rocky Point, and Off The Wall. The main surf season runs from October to April as powerful NW groundswells from the North Pacific begin arriving. October marks the start of this season, with consistent overhead to double-overhead surf but generally fewer crowds than the peak winter months. Early swells bring the first sessions at Pipeline and Sunset Beach before the major competitions and media attention arrive later in the season. With quieter lineups and still world-class waves, October offers a unique chance to experience the North Shore before the winter contest season begins.

Siargao, Philippines

October is one of the best months to surf Siargao as the NE swell season reaches full strength. The famous Cloud 9 break sees consistent swells with around 70–80% of days offering clean surf, often in the 6–12 ft range, with reliable SW offshore winds in the mornings. October also hosts the annual Cloud 9 Surfing Cup, the Philippines’ longest-running international surf competition, bringing professional surfers and a lively atmosphere to General Luna. While the contest period can be busy, the island still offers 30+ other breaks nearby where crowds remain lighter. Warm water around 27–28°C and consistent swell make October one of the most exciting times to surf Siargao.

  • Single Fin Siargao — General Luna · ★ 4.7 · the best-value social option during October, with a surf community that gathers specifically to experience the Cup contest atmosphere and the island’s finest waves — the shared sessions, nightly surf film screenings, and communal watching of contest heats from the Cloud 9 boardwalk create an October experience that is specifically about Siargao’s surf culture rather than just individual wave count

Maldives — Central & Southern Atolls

October marks the transition between seasons in the Maldives. The main surf season in the North Malé Atoll begins to slow down as the SE monsoon weakens, reducing swell consistency at breaks like Sultans, Cokes, and Chickens. At the same time, attention shifts south toward the Central and Southern Atolls, including Huvadhoo Atoll, which can still receive quality swell and far fewer crowds. Early NE monsoon energy may start appearing late in the month, creating smaller but clean waves with excellent shape. With fewer charter boats operating in the north and less-developed surf infrastructure in the south, October offers a quieter and more authentic Maldivian surf experience.

Chicama, Peru

Hidden gem

Chicama is famous for holding the record for the longest surfable left-hand wave in the world, with rides that can reach up to 4 kilometres along the point at Puerto Malabrigo. The wave runs through several sections including El Hombre, La Punta, Keys, and El Point, allowing incredibly long rides that can last several minutes. October is one of the best shoulder-season months to surf here, with periodic SW groundswells from Southern Ocean storms and reliable offshore winds in the mornings. A local boat tow-back service helps surfers return quickly to the takeoff zone after the long rides. The area sits along Peru’s desert coastline and retains the relaxed atmosphere of a small fishing village turned surf destination.

The world’s longest wave in its last productive weeks — 4 km left-hand rides, shoulder-season quiet, a surfing experience impossible to replicate anywhere else on earth.

Chicama is one of the most accessible world-class waves in terms of skill level — the wave never gets truly heavy and the sand bottom (with some rocky sections at low tide) is forgiving by point break standards. Beginners can access the inside section (El Point); intermediates ride the main La Punta zone; experienced surfers take on El Hombre on the outer section. The main physical challenge is stamina — rides of 2–5 minutes are genuinely exhausting, and the boat tow-back service is not optional if you want any meaningful wave count. Water is 15–18°C in October (Humboldt Current); a 3/2mm fullsuit is comfortable, 4/3mm for cold-sensitive surfers. Galicia, Spain

Hidden gem 🔍

Located in the northwest corner of Spain, Galicia faces the open Atlantic and becomes a powerful swell magnet once North Atlantic storms return in autumn. In October, consistent W and NW swells hit its long coastline, creating excellent conditions across both west- and north-facing beaches. Pantín, near Valdoviño, is the region’s best-known surf spot and host of the Pantín Classic Galicia Pro, offering powerful beach break peaks on strong swells. Razo Beach, south of A Coruña, is one of the most consistent breaks with multiple sandbanks and plenty of space in the lineup. More remote spots such as Soesto and Nemiña along the Costa da Morte provide quieter alternatives for surfers willing to explore. Beyond the surf, Galicia is known for its dramatic green landscapes, excellent seafood, and historic cities like Santiago de Compostela.

Razo and Pantín both have beginner-friendly sections at lower tide on moderate swells; the multiple peaks give enough space that beginners and advanced surfers rarely interfere with each other. Water temperature in October is 15–17°C — a 4/3mm fullsuit with boots is essential (Galicia’s water is genuinely cold year-round; this is not a place to underprepare). Galicia’s weather is notoriously changeable — pack for rain, wind, and sunshine in the same day; conditions can shift completely within hours. Fly to Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) or A Coruña (LCG) — both have budget airline connections from the UK and mainland Europe; a rental car is essential for exploring the full coast.
