Surfing Gerupuk: South Lombok’s All-Levels Bay

Gerupuk is south Lombok’s most dependable surf, a big sheltered bay a short drive east of Kuta Lombok where a cluster of reef breaks face different directions, so there is almost always something rideable. That is what makes it special: while the exposed reef passes nearby are fickle, Gerupuk keeps working across a wide range of tides, winds and swell sizes. It is a rare spot that genuinely covers everyone, with a soft, forgiving wave for beginners on the inside and punchy, hollow peaks for the confident on the outer reefs. Most breaks are a quick boat ride from the beach, and it is a favorite base for surf-camp guests. Gerupuk features in our guide to surfing in Indonesia. Here is every peak and how to surf it.

Quick surf guide to Gerupuk

  • Best season: dry season (April to October) on SW groundswell, but it works close to year-round
  • Best for beginners: Inside Gerupuk, a soft, forgiving right over flat reef
  • Best for experts: Outside Gerupuk and Pelawangan on size
  • Wave type: several boat-access reef breaks around one bay
  • Water temp: 26 to 29°C, boardshorts and a rash vest, reef booties advised
  • Crowds: the Inside gets busy with schools; outer peaks quieter
  • Getting there: Lombok airport (LOP), about 20 to 30 minutes to the bay
  • Budget: $25 to $90 a day, plus a small boat fee per session
A wave for every level
Gerupuk is unusual in covering the whole range. Inside Gerupuk is one of Lombok’s best beginner waves, a long, forgiving right over a soft, grass-covered flat reef, while Outside, Don-Don and Pelawangan step up to fast, hollow and heavy for intermediates and experts. Book a boat and you can spread across the peaks as the conditions and your level allow.

Where to surf at Gerupuk

Gerupuk Bay holds several peaks facing different ways, nearly all reached by a short boat taxi from the village beach. Tap a marker to preview a break, then click its name to jump to my full rundown below.

The breaks

From the gentlest learner wave in the region to a heavy barrel that only wakes on the biggest days.

Inside Gerupuk (Bumbang)

Wave
soft reef right over flat reef
Swell
any size, works small
Best wind
SW offshore for this corner
Best tide
all tides, mid ideal
Level
beginner to intermediate
Crowd
busy with schools

Inside Gerupuk, also called Bumbang, is the go-to learner wave in south Lombok: a long, forgiving right that peels over a soft, grass-covered flat reef and works on almost any tide and swell. That reliability is why the schools take beginners here by boat, and why improvers love it to link turns on a gentle wall and a long, friendly inside. It gets busy, so watch for loose boards and traffic, but it is about as welcoming as a reef wave gets.

Outside Gerupuk (Kutang)

Wave
fast, hollow reef right
Swell
SW, 4 to 6 ft best
Best wind
SW offshore
Best tide
mid to high
Level
intermediate to advanced
Crowd
moderate to busy on size

Outside Gerupuk, or Kutang, is the bay’s quality wave, a fast right that drops in with a real takeoff and races into a hollow inside section, best in the 4-to-6-foot range though it can hold bigger. It suits confident intermediates and up who can make the drop and generate speed, and it is a proper step above the Inside. Time it for mid to high tide on a SW swell with the offshore, and it delivers the punch that keeps experienced surfers coming back.

Don-Don

Wave
A-frame reef peak, lefts and rights
Swell
SSW, medium and up
Best wind
light, S favored
Best tide
all tides, dropping best
Level
intermediate
Crowd
usually quieter

Tucked further inside the bay, Don-Don is an A-frame peak that bends both left and right, needing a touch more swell to break but rewarding it with a fun, rippable wall for intermediates. It favors lighter winds and a dropping tide, and because it sits deepest in the bay it often stays quieter than the Inside and Outside peaks. A good option when you want a peak to yourself and the swell has some size.

Pelawangan (Gili Golong)

Wave
heavy reef right, barrels
Swell
large SSW groundswell
Best wind
light, SW offshore
Best tide
incoming, rising
Level
advanced
Crowd
uncrowded

Out at the bay mouth, Pelawangan, sometimes called Gili Golong, only switches on with the largest swells, and when it does it turns into a heavy, barreling right that earns its barrel-city nickname. It is exposed to open Indian Ocean groundswell, breaks on a rising tide with light offshore winds, and is strictly for advanced surfers who can pull into a serious tube. It stays uncrowded simply because it so rarely breaks, and when it is on it is the bay’s showpiece.

Prime (dry season SW groundswell)
Shoulder (smaller, glassy, still surfable)

South Lombok mirrors Bali. The dry season, roughly April to October, is the classic prime window, when consistent SW groundswell and offshore E and SE trade winds line up, though those trades tend to build after about 9am and can rough up the more exposed outer peaks, so mornings are best. July and August bring the biggest, most consistent swell, when Outside and Pelawangan show their teeth.

What sets Gerupuk apart is that it barely has a dead month. Because the peaks face different ways, some work cleanly on the wet-season winds of November to March too, when swells are often smaller but conditions are glassier, and the Inside break is surfable almost any day of the year. The water is warm throughout, 26 to 29°C, so it is boardshorts and a rash vest, with reef booties worth having for the coral bottoms and the boat entries.

Where to stay and surf Gerupuk

Gerupuk and neighboring Kuta Lombok have a strong surf-camp scene. A handful of camps sit right on the Gerupuk beachfront with direct boat access to the bay, while Kuta Lombok, the region’s main surf town about seven kilometers west, has many more camps, guesthouses and schools running all-ability packages, guided boat sessions and coaching. Booking a camp is the easiest way to sort daily boat transfers and access to the wider south coast, from Gerupuk to Mawi, Ekas and beyond. Come able to handle reef on the outer peaks, and lean on the local boatmen for the tides and the lineup. For the wider country, see our guide to surfing in Indonesia.

What to pack for Gerupuk

Warm water, reef bottoms and boat access are what to plan for. My Gerupuk checklist:

  • Boardshorts and a rash vest, no wetsuit in 26 to 29 degree water; reef booties are worth it for the coral and boat entries
  • A forgiving board for the Inside and a shortboard or step-up for the outer peaks; if you are learning, check your board volume and rent a soft-top
  • Spare leashes and fins, plus a first-aid kit for reef cuts on the outer breaks
  • Reef-safe SPF, a surf hat and a surf watch for the tides and to catch the calm morning window before the trades

Getting to Gerupuk

Gerupuk sits on the south coast of Lombok, just east of Kuta Lombok. Handily, both are close to Lombok International Airport (LOP), with a private car or ride-app transfer taking about 20 to 30 minutes, so you can be surfing soon after you land. Lombok has domestic links to Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya, plus some regional international flights. Once you are there, most surfers get around by scooter, and the bay’s breaks are reached by short, inexpensive boat taxis from the village beach. If you are planning a wider trip, pair this with surfing in Indonesia.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gerupuk good for beginner surfing?

Yes, it is one of the best beginner surf spots in Lombok thanks to Inside Gerupuk, a long, forgiving right over a soft, grass-covered reef. Most Kuta Lombok surf schools take first-timers there by boat, and because the wave works on almost any tide, lessons run reliably.

Can advanced surfers find challenging waves surfing in Gerupuk?

Absolutely. Outside Gerupuk offers fast, hollow rights with real takeoff drops, and Pelawangan turns into a heavy barreling right on the largest swells. On a solid day the outer peaks give experienced surfers plenty of punch and plenty of barrel.

When is the best time of year to surf Gerupuk?

The dry season from April to October is prime, with consistent SW groundswell and offshore morning trades, peaking around July and August. That said, Gerupuk’s bay orientation means some breaks stay surfable in the wet season too, so there is really no dead month here.

Do I need a boat to surf the breaks in Gerupuk Bay?

Yes, nearly all of Gerupuk’s breaks are boat access only. Local boatmen run short, inexpensive shuttles from the village beach out to Inside, Outside, Don-Don and Pelawangan, and a boat also lets you move between peaks as the conditions change through the session.

What should I wear for surfing in Gerupuk’s water?

Water temperatures sit around 26 to 29 degrees Celsius year-round, so boardshorts or a swimsuit with a rash vest are enough. Reef booties are strongly recommended because the breaks sit over coral reef and you enter and exit by boat.

How crowded is surfing at Gerupuk?

The Inside break can get busy with beginners and surf schools, especially mid-morning. The outer breaks like Don-Don and Pelawangan are generally quieter, and going early or booking a boat to spread across the peaks helps you find space.

Gerupuk is the safety net of south Lombok, the bay that keeps working when everywhere else goes flat or blows out, and it manages to be a beginner’s classroom and an expert’s playground at the same time. Book a boat, pick the peak that matches your level and the swell, ride the calm morning window, and wear your booties on the reef. Get that right and Gerupuk will earn a place on every Lombok trip. See you in the lineup.
