Where to Surf in May

May is the month the surf world shifts axis. The Southern Hemisphere winter officially arrives, which means the storm tracks that produce the world’s best waves are switching on. Jeffreys Bay wakes up. Fiji’s Cloudbreak starts firing. New Zealand’s left-hand points come alive. At the same time, the Atlantic hasn’t shut down yet — Portugal and France both have waves and pleasant spring weather. The tropics are maintaining consistent swells. May is arguably the most global month in surfing: wherever you are, somewhere near you is probably pumping right now.

Ten destinations worth your attention this month: eight that earn their spot on every best-of list for good reason, and two your mates probably haven’t heard of.

Quick Overview — Where to Surf in May

Jeffreys Bay, South Africa

May is when Jeffreys Bay’s season officially switches on. The Southern Ocean’s Roaring Forties begin their winter assault, sending powerful SW groundswells wrapping around Cape St Francis and into the bay. The result — Supertubes — is considered one of the top ten waves in the world: a long, fast, intensely mechanical right-hander that runs for up to 300 metres through multiple sections (Boneyards, Supers, Impossibles, Tubes, The Point) and barrels in a way that almost no other wave on earth manages with such consistency. May is the early season window: swells are building but haven’t hit the July–August peak, the WSL Pro hasn’t arrived yet to fill every car park and every line-up, and conditions are often better than June in terms of wind. The water is cooling into winter — 3mm suits needed — but the air is mild, the Garden Route scenery is extraordinary, and the dolphins turn up at dawn patrols like they own the place.

Season opens at the world’s best right point — swells building, WSL Pro not here yet.

Kitchen Windows and Dolphin Beach are safe, welcoming learn-to-surf spots. The Point suits intermediates wanting long rides and room to make turns. Supertubes and Boneyards are strictly advanced — fast, shallow, with consequences. A car is essential: a one-hour drive either direction opens up dozens more breaks along the Eastern Cape coast. Wetsuits required year-round; a 3mm fullsuit suits May conditions.

Fiji (Cloudbreak)

May marks the opening of Fiji’s best surf season, and Cloudbreak is the reason the world pays attention. It’s a left-hand reef pass about 1.5 miles offshore from the heart-shaped Tavarua Island, accessible only by boat, and when the SW swells start arriving in May it produces some of the most intensely powerful and beautiful barrel waves on the planet. Three sections — The Point, The Middle, and Shish Kebabs — can link up on the right swell into a 200-yard freight train that demands your absolute respect and attention. The WSL has held its Fiji Pro here for decades for good reason. Beyond Cloudbreak, the archipelago offers Restaurants (a machine-like left directly in front of Tavarua Island, more forgiving and very consistent), Namotu Left, Swimming Pools, and a host of other breaks at different levels. May catches the season as it builds — crowds haven’t peaked yet, swell is consistent, and the Fijian weather and warm water make even a wipeout feel forgivable.

Cloudbreak season opens — SW swells firing, warm water barrels in paradise.

Cloudbreak is strictly intermediate to advanced — a shallow, fast, powerful reef break that breaks boards and confidence in equal measure. Intermediates can access the more forgiving Restaurants and Namotu Left. The only way to surf any of these breaks is by boat: plan your stay accordingly. No surf shop on the island, so pack extra fins, legropes, and a repair kit. Water is 27–28°C, boardshorts plus reef booties recommended.

Raglan, New Zealand

May is when Raglan enters its finest window. The first serious long-period SW swells of the Southern Hemisphere winter start rolling in off the Tasman Sea, meeting the three left-hand point breaks at Indicators, Whale Bay, and Manu Bay in a sequence that on rare, perfect days links all the way down the point for over two kilometres. Manu Bay — made famous by the 1966 film The Endless Summer — is New Zealand’s most iconic wave: a long, peeling mechanical left that produces waves lasting minutes, not seconds, at its best. It’s the holiest of grails for goofy-footers visiting the Southern Hemisphere. The town itself is bohemian, artist-run, full of good coffee and great sunsets. Two hours from Auckland, surrounded by volcanic black-sand beaches and dramatic Tasman Sea scenery. May sits in that sweet spot between autumn’s consistency and winter’s full power.

Peak autumn conditions — the world’s most iconic left-hand points, season starting to fire.

Ngarunui Beach is the sandy beach break where all the surf schools operate — excellent for beginners and forgiving in virtually any conditions. Manu Bay is the jewel: a long, rippable left for intermediates and up. Indicators is the outer point and most challenging section — expert-level on solid swells. A 4/3mm wetsuit is recommended for May. The town’s laid-back vibe means even a flat day is enjoyable.

Portugal (Peniche & Ericeira)

May is an excellent transition month for Portugal — the end of spring and the last reliable window before the Atlantic goes into summer mode. Waves at Peniche and Ericeira are consistent and generally in the 2–5 ft range: powerful enough to challenge intermediate surfers, manageable enough for beginners, and a million miles from the stormy 12 ft closeouts of January. The weather is warm and settled, water is around 17–18°C (a shorty or light 3/2mm), and the crowds that will fill Baleal and Ribeira d’Ilhas by July are still manageable. Supertubos at Peniche — host of the WSL CT event each autumn — is calmer in spring but still delivers excellent hollow beach barrels on the right days. Ericeira, Europe’s only World Surf Reserve, has 6+ quality breaks within 10 minutes of each other. This is the best destination in Europe to book a surf camp, improve your surfing on consistent waves, and eat extraordinarily well between sessions.

Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

May is peak season in the Mentawais. The Southern Indian Ocean is generating its most consistent and powerful swells of the year, the SW groundswells are arriving with a frequency and size that justifies the Mentawais’ reputation as the most wave-dense tropical destination on earth, and the 70+ world-class breaks are fully operational. Rifles. Macaronis. Bank Vaults. Lance’s Right. Pitstops. Telescopes. Every one of them firing. This is also the beginning of the busy season — boats are getting fuller, land camps are at capacity, and the June–August peak will be even more crowded. May is the sweet spot: full-power swell with slightly fewer people than the height of winter. If you’ve booked Mentawais in May, you already know what you’ve done. If you haven’t, start checking availability now.

Nicaragua (Popoyo)

May signals the switch from Nicaragua’s dry season to the first SW swells of the rainy season — and for intermediate to advanced surfers, it’s the single most exciting moment in the Nicaraguan surf calendar. Popoyo’s Main Reef is an extraordinarily consistent A-frame reef break that barrels both left and right. In the dry season (November–April) it’s a fun longboard wave. In May, when the SW swells arrive, it starts throwing hollow, punchy tubes over a shallow reef that offers one of the most reliable barrel experiences in Central America. The Outer Reef — one of the heaviest waves in the region, breaking in 12+ feet — wakes up for the first time. The wind machine that powers Nicaragua is Lake Managua, 50 miles inland, which creates a unique funnel effect delivering 300+ days of offshore winds annually. May combines offshore conditions, new swell energy, warm water, and prices that undercut every comparable destination on this list.

SW swell season opens — hollow A-frames fire up, 300 days of offshore wind, budget paradise.

Beginner’s Bay is the area’s dedicated learn-to-surf spot — sheltered from the main break, sandy, friendly. The Main Reef suits confident intermediates and above. Water is 29°C; boardshorts only required.

The Maldives

May is the Maldives’ last reliable window before the SW monsoon arrives in earnest in June — making it still very much worth considering, particularly for the Central Atolls, which are now picking up consistent swell alongside the Southern Atolls that fired in March and April. Cokes, Chickens, Sultans, Pasta Point, and a string of other world-class reef passes are all operating with consistent Indian Ocean groundswells and fewer crowds than the summer peak. The water remains 29–30°C, the coral reefs are in full health, and the backdrop of turquoise atolls and overwater bungalows remains uniquely Maldivian. If you’re considering this destination, May is worth watching the forecast carefully — early-arriving monsoons can disrupt conditions, but when it’s good in May, it’s genuinely exceptional.

Last pre-monsoon window — consistent Indian Ocean groundswells, central atolls lighting up.

All reef breaks — not suitable for beginners. Intermediates have Sultans and Chickens; advanced surfers target Cokes and Pasta Point. When it’s good, there’s nothing better on earth.

Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka

By May, Arugam Bay‘s east coast season is properly established. The first SW swells of the Indian Ocean winter have been arriving since April, and Main Point is working with increasing consistency and size. The right-hand point can peel for hundreds of metres when the swell cooperates, and both Pottuvil Point and Whiskey Point offer more powerful options for experienced surfers. The town itself runs on a frequency unique in surf travel: tuk-tuks rattling past cheap guesthouses, rice and curry for a dollar, sunset beers with the kind of surfers who care more about the next swell than their Instagram following. Sri Lanka is exceptional value at any time of year, but May in Arugam Bay is particularly special: the season is established, the waves are consistent, and it hasn’t yet hit the July–August peak that brings more visitors. One of Asia’s genuinely great surf towns.

Hidden Gems — May Edition

These two won’t show up on your competitors’ roundups. Both reward those willing to dig a little deeper.

Simeulue Island, Indonesia

A two-hour flight from Medan sits one of the Indian Ocean’s best-kept secrets. Simeulue is a remote island off the northwest coast of Sumatra that receives the same SW groundswells that fire the Mentawais and Maldives, but with none of the crowds, none of the prices, and a rawness that feels like what Indo must have been twenty years ago. The island has a handful of consistent reef breaks — left-handers on the south coast that fire in March–May before the peak season crowds descend — and a local surf culture centred around the small town of Sinabang. The tsunami of 2004 devastated the island; local legend holds that traditional knowledge of warning signs saved nearly every resident, a story that has become part of the island’s identity. Come now, before it’s discovered.

Indonesia’s best-kept secret — SW swells, empty reefs, still virtually unknown.

Hossegor, France

Hossegor is Europe’s answer to Pipeline. La Gravière — a stretch of beach on the southern Landes coast — produces hollow, powerful beach barrels over steeply-pitched sandbars that rival anything the North Atlantic delivers to any other European coast. The WSL Quiksilver Pro France runs here every October for good reason. But May is the secret: the season is just opening, the Spanish and French school groups haven’t arrived yet, the water is warming to 16–17°C (3/2mm territory), and the swell is still consistent from the tail end of the North Atlantic winter. The town is extraordinary: pine forests meeting Atlantic dunes, world-class food within walking distance of the beach, and a local surf culture that has produced more professional surfers per capita than arguably anywhere in Europe. Come in May and you’ll surf La Gravière with a fraction of the July crowd. Come in July and you’ll be sharing it with everyone who saw this article.

La Gravière and La Nord are for advanced surfers — heavy, fast, shallow peaks that require commitment. Seignosse and Capbreton nearby have much more manageable peaks for intermediates. Beginners have excellent options around Soorts-Hossegor and along the Seignosse beach. A 3/2mm wetsuit is sufficient for May. The town is superb for non-surfing days: Basque food, wine, and the pine forest coastal path between Capbreton and Hossegor.
